OK I know I said I would be good but to my credit - the alst month of work has been nuts! Now that I have some down time and things are coming to a leveling off I will be around more. : )

Last weekend Alex and I went down toan to the Festival of Ideas for the New City - Street Fest.

"major new collaborative initiative in New York involving scores of Downtown organizations working together to harness the power of the creative community to imagine the future city and explore ideas that will shape it.'

It was such a great day to head down there and we go to visit some very interesting tents too. There weer areas where they were teaching kids to cook using all locally grown food... An area that was just about educating people on bike in the city, areas on how to green your building and or roof... And an area tht kids could go and play with large foam shaped to really encouage using their hands and enforcing imaginations etc.

There was plans and designs for what the next stage of the subways would be... These were really great to read about and to see.

It was a wonderfull day that also brought with it amazing local eats from Brooklyn! ( Big fan! )

Tata Gala

I know I know I have overly made up for the lack of posting. This is the last one for today though. :)

My talented fiance Alex entered in to a contest to raise money for breast cancer research. The Tata Gala. His piece was chosen with 100 others out of over 1,000 pieces to show in a gallery in Sarasota Florida in November.

Out of those he was one of 17 artists to be shown again in the Tata Galla's Best of the Breast show here in New York City this past February. Here are some shots from the show. It was great and there were so many great peices. : )

These were some of my favorites from the show. Everyone's work was so well done. Congrats to all.

Dear Blog -

Yes, it has been way too long since I have wrote on you, and spread any news at all. For this I am sorry..

I have been working very hard at my new position - I love it there! I have just been put on as project manager for a new project. I am excited to get to work on it and get as many creatives to come and share their work. Come and check it out (www.jovoto.com).

My office is really sweet! There are only 5 of us in the New York Office but it is nice.

I have gotten to meet people that I think are awesome ( Allan Chochinov editor of Core77) and get to set up accounts for some of our celeb judge.

It has been a blast working in the city and I love traveling there every day. Last week I was leaving work and got to sit with and chat for a few seconds with Indina Menzell. She was right outside of my buiding when I was leaving work. She is really nice ( for the few moments that I got to talk to her).

I have also been on vacation to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - and then there was Jury Duty adn Thanksgiving. Back to work tomorrow! ( Here are some sweet shots!)

Oh! And we got to make and play with out light sabers!

I promise to be on here as much as before! There are things that I plan to be working on.... And things I plan to still share...

I am sorry that I have been neglecting my blog lately. I have been really busy! On top of trying to re-work my portfolio for an area of design that I really want to get in to - project management/ marketing/ strategy etc. New things have surfaced that I am so excited to share!

Over the course of two weeks and after two trips to the city and two interviews I am now employed! I started this past Thursday and it was great! I am right in the Flat Iron District ( one of my favorite areas!)! I have finally accomplished one of my biggest goals - to work in the city! It is still so weird to be going there but I am so excited for my first full week there!I will be interning for 3 months to work towards full time employment.

Jovoto is German company that has jumped over here and recently opened their first office in the states. There is not that many of us in the office but it is nice though. I enjoy that is is an open room that we all work together in.

Definitely check out this site! Even if you have a full time job there is so many fun things to get involved with. We are always running contests with companies that you can become apart of! Come and challenged by contests for big brands, international companies and NGOs!!!!! There is such diversity with all of the companies and contests that there is one and more that will be of interest to anyone! You have the ability to post your work in progress and get feed back from other creatives involved! Don't worry though we do appreciate all of your hard work! The artist is never shafted here! ( which I love!) You can always get big prize money - and there is always a chance that the company purchases your idea as well!

While there I am one of the Community Managers and will be in charge of contests and guiding them and the people involved, working on the platform, creating case studies at the end of projects, etc. This is a great position! I am very excited to get more involved and work with the people and the companies that I have already started to work with!

There are a bunch of really great contests coming up and I highly suggest getting involved! Keep those creative juices flowing!

Even though there is so much more to share with you I wanted to show that I am now a member of Behance Network.

I really enjoy how they have set this entire site up and how much it encompasses. Behance is a great creative resource professionally. I have already come across so many talented people. I would definitely suggest getting in to it. I have been an avid member of Coroflot for some time now and I am starting to prefer Behance much more. There is so much that they offer you. Though they do not hold a candle to Coroflots job postings. ( I will always remain faithful to Coroflot. :)

I love cupcakes who doesn't? They are cute, oh so good and they look good with anything!

I wanted to show and share my love of cupcakes and so I started to fiddle here and there and well while researching and looking around the first thing that happened was.....I got hungry. Really hungry! But then I got back to work and made this:

kuhp-kake is a play on the dictionary phonetics. I played with it a bit but i like that it is different yet cute.

I then created their website. I wanted something light and cute.

One of my very good friends Tania Ulloa-Olavarrieta is still is the great area of Columbus, Ohio. Not only is she a great product designer but also a great graphic designer.She has also been recently blessed with one of the cutest little boys that I have ever seen!

Tania and her two sisters (shown above), have gotten together with their children in mind to create something wonderful. They not only created it but they want to share it with as many people as they can.

Bebo Organics was started as a personal need to provide organic baby food for young children, with the convenience moms needs. Their focus is on 8-24 months/stages 3-4; all the food is homade, with 99% organic ingredients, no preservatives, no thickeners.

I love reading and following Cecilia Gorman's blog "Confessions of a Creative Recruiter". She has great incite on the industry and tips on putting yourself out there.

Well the other day I was reading up on some past post's that I had missed and came across this:

Then I found this link CLICK ME! You can read the entire book online.

This book goes through 100 Women in various fields of work - they each talk about success and the wisdom that they had picked up along the way. There is Cat Cora ( A chef who i LOVE), Barbie, to the former White House Press Secretary Dee Dee Myers, and MANY MORE.

There is info on each woman and then a little video clip for most of them.

Being a man's world still in may professions it was really nice to find this. I have read through it on that link above. It was great to see the diversity of the jobs as well. Check it out it is a great find!

NYC or bust

Yesterday I packed my portfolio and sketch book and headed down to the city. I had an appointment with the lovely Brian Young at Creative Circle. ( Creative Circle is a creative recruiter - they do freelance, part time and full time.) We had been emailing back and fourth and this was my final acceptance in to their program.

They are here in NYC but I know that they are in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, LA, Philli, Seattle and San Fran. A very good friend of mine Dan Blake was nice enough to tell me about them and I immediately signed up. The only thing is that you need to be close to one of these branches to become a "employee" of theirs because even for the freelance you are needed to go in to the specified companies offices.

After my meeting we walked around for while it was nice to have no agenda and walk the city. I was able to show my fiance (who was nice enough to come down with it ) China Town, the financial district and Soho ( I would LOVE to live there!), But we got to see some really nice views too.

This we thought was awesome! They were painting the ad on the side of this building. The type was done beautifully!

I picked up this really cool scarf from the Muji store.

We happened to pass by the MOMA Design Store and went in ( duh! ) Alex found this bracelet of the subway line - so I of course splurged!!! It is so so cute!

We also found this cute ringlet book and a time line of design. ( would not mind getting my hands on the time line! It was created so nicely!

We then found this great stationary store that I love Kates Paperie! I am always on the site checking what new things they have out.

I loved the interior of the store too! It was such a great eclectic feeling.

We then found this print!

Alex and I love these types of prints, we already have a great map of Paris from the 1800's and awesome world map that we have found in Columbus and in D.C.

A fabulous find?

I know that this might be way too good to be true, BUT....... My mom and my step dad were traveling back to New York from Florida. They stopped at a few antique shops along the way and came across a wonderful casserole dish.

Eva at 103 is still designing.

My mom was nice enough to pick it up for me because she felt that I would love its design. Well, I do!

When she gave it to me I did have a moment of a few double takes though. Its form resembles of my my favorite designers Eva Zeisel's work, who is known for her beautiful ceramic pieces.

(only one I could find online)

This is her casserole dish: it is the only one I could find online. I am going to go through some more books when I get the chance.

This is the one that my mom found for $8.00! The look similar... Right?

Now is this hers? A Fake? I have no idea... There are similarities to both but there is no information about her work on this particular piece having flowers printed on them.

I plan on talking to some people around here and try to contact some in the city but it would be great if for only 8.00 my mom stumbled upon this gem!

I can only hope! I am sure that it is a great knock off but either way I think that it is adorable!

Rhinebeck Farmers Market.

This afternoon taking a break from some house work I sat down and worked on a little project. I love the name combination so I sat down and got to work.

Rhinebeck is a a quaint town just north of where I am in Hyde Park. I have just learned that there is a winter market coming this year! Great huh? I also have been notified that the market has been up and running for 16 years now.

This is just small something that I wanted to work on. Even though there is a market exsisting I wanted to work on something local for fun.

There is a lot more coming in the next few days and coming weeks! I am very excited to share it!

While going about my business during my daily blog coverage I discovered something amazing! Vitra Design Museum has put out an online exhibition. '

All about "Hidden Heros'' this product exhibit has some of the most well known and obscure things that you could think of. This exhibit is an amazing interactive where the user is able to choose their path through it. Once choosing a color the you can begin.

There is information, photos, and little video clips about the history of the product, designer, and when and where it was designed. I am in love with this! I can stop clicking on the color bars and see what is next!

Thank you Jonathan Ives and team! Have you seen the new Nano? It is amazing that just a few short years it has become this!

On October 23, 2001 the iPod was first released. It is now a decade later and there is not only touch capability but look how compact it is! There seems to be no wasted space when designing this product. I feel that this will be really popular for what it is. You can now do everything that the iPod Touch could first do just on a smaller space. The Touch now has taken on the abilities of the iPhone without the phone capabilities.

I am really excited about this - You save money by not having to pay for the Apple phone service while having all of the perks of the iPhone and then some! You can now use Skype it and have better new features like being able to video in HD. Who can go wrong?! All under $400, 8gb, 32gb, and 64gb - newer and slimmer design!

LOVE IT!

What will the next decade bring us in the form of mp3 technology? I am so excited to wait and see!

After much more sketching and thinking about little brooms and little dust pans, I was able to speak with a designer about them all and where to go from here.

After looking through everything I have done, I sectioned things off based on what my restirctions were. Being visable in a room or stored. I chose three for each.

After that, I began focusing on one form the visable category. I worked out some detail isses and layouts and then plan on getting to work on the rest of it later one today.

I plan on heading in there three days next week! Hopefully this projects will be wrapped up by then because I am eager to see how this turns out! ( and to start on the new one too.)

As of the end of last week like I mentioned I was heading out to Evo Design in Watertown, Conn.

Well the one visit is now going to be turned in to whenever I want :) I will be heading the 80 miles there 3 to 4 x's a week to work on things. These things being for my personal portfolio of course!

It is great! I can not express how much I appreciate it all! I have a desk space to work and am able to get critiques form the other designers and the president Aaron Szymanski. Every one is so nice and helpful. The environment there is awesome.

Here is a project that I started last week and will be working on all this week:

A broom and dust pan for small apartments and limited storage areas. I am segmenting my sketching in to two sections. Designs that can left out in to the room if possible and designs that can be stored but don't take up space. Here is a glimpse of where I am as of now - they are rough but the finals will be posted as soon as they are done.

After this project there are a few more that I have ready to start and I am very excited to get to work on them all!

Okay so I am sick of being lazy and weirded out that college is over and I am away from everyone... So I will be working A LOT~ I will be posting everyday unless I am away on vacation (end of the month). People can always improve and I intend to. I am not full time employed at a design firm and so why not work on what I have already been doing for 4 years right?!

Here is a project that I am starting. I will be sharing all of my new projects - and I hope that something good comes out of this! Here is a sneak peak of what I am doing.
I am going to be heading to EVO Design on Friday afternoon for a sketch session with a new project and I will post that tomorrow.

Wee little cars...

I would never think that a Smart Car was very or even a nice ride.
While in Italy I was able to drive one around for a day or two. Let me first say that getting in to one and ready to drive - I was shocked at the amount of room that there was inside.I felt that I had almost as much room as I do in my Accord.

My co-pilot was claustrophobic and not looking forward to getting in to the small car. Once inside she said the was relieved by the amount of space the the driver and the passenger actually have.

It has pretty high safety ratings, and is known for its friendliness to the environment. You can also make it very much your own car too. I would drive it again, it was so much fun. I would also suggest that everyone at least get in one and drive it if you can.

I feel that everyone needs to know all that they can about everything and about the fields that they are in... I am addicted to blogs, filing things and finding new and cool things and people!
As for Blogs I am up to about 150 and keep looking for more! I use Google Reader - Helps me section everything off so nicley!
My Reference folders are ever growing and getting more and more categories... There is always something new that inspires me - my newest source: Ceramics. I love the forms that can be achieved in the medium.
I have a Designers / Design Firms folder that is also getting bigger as well I am always searching for people that I haven't heard of yet.

Cleaning House

I have been in a funk for a bit now... I chose that enough is enough, take control right? Well after sketching today and finding more research for a new project I decided to go through my massive amount of book marks in their folders and find what I need and don't need. Along the way I found things I forgot I had and got So excited to find and things that I don;t know why I ever saved :)

Here are some things that are in my main folder because they make me happy!

There is a site Industrial Design Served professionals post their new work all the time.
I think it is sad I haven't been to TED in ages! Everyone should go! It is addicting!

I couldn't help it...

I LOVE stop animation! I am a have a bad weakness for it. I can sit and watch it for hours. I follow this blog - Dark Matters. He is making is own stop animation movie but posts a lot of clips of old movies too.

I have been going over and tweaking some things over the course of summer and I have beefed up ( literally) my BBQ concept and added a little to the tea pot that I designed over the my last term.

This is also an older project that I am revamping to add to my portfolio. It was a sponsored project with McGill AirFlow LLC. We redesigned their Leak Detective Kit - this system are usedwhen testing HVAC's in buildings.
They are all not much for right now but everything if you have noticed have been getting a bit of an over haul. This evening marks the newest version of my website! Check everything out!

I have been working with the great Bocci and his parental unit Joan Demartin. What a great twosome! I love working with people that love what they do and get excited to do and to try new things! These two LOVE IT!

I have now been labeled not only Bocci's Beefs blog designer but now and in charge of marketing and social networking. I love it! I have given Bocci some new ares to check him out at:

I have been absent for the past few weeks and will be a bit more...

I have graduated, and started to move to New York, I have been to Sicily and to Rome for three weeks!!!! I am going to go back to Ohio for the weekend and move everything head to Michigan for a day and then back to new york where I am tweaking my portfolio and continuing the search for a job... O and I am now engaged! All of this in one month! LOL

It has been a little nuts! I am so exited to share with you all of the new work that I have been doing but I will be posting that in a little while.

Retirement Party

This weekend was the Boat Regatta and on of my professors surprise retirement party. WHAT A COLD DAY! Oh My! Thank god there was a bon-fire! It was crazy windy and cold. But it was a great time too!

The Regatta is something that the sophomores get to do at the end of their first year in the program. There are typically two teachers in the studio class and their two classes compete against each other given all the same materials ( Cardboard, tape, PVC Pipe, Tarp, and a rope or twine.) They have to build three boats, a One man, Two man and three man. It is always held at one of our teachers houses since he has a small pond in his back yard where he sets up a course that you have to go through.

As tradition the weather was crap! but it was fun to see everyone get started on building and working together while the rest of us tried to stay warm!

\We were able to surprise our professor even more when passed students from years ago were able to come down and visit! From all over too! We have been planning for a while behind his back. We were able to raise some money and get him a really nice chair from Herman Miller. An Eames LCW chair. ( LOVE IT!) We also surprised him with a photo of us. His last senior class.

It was a lot of fun and he was really surprised.

I know that yet again it has been a while since I have posted but get ready for more of a regular basis! I am officially finished with school as of 8:00 tomorrow evening!

Four years of non-stop work will have come to an end! I am sad and to be honest it hasnt hit me yet. (We shall see how that goes)

Here are the final shots of my last meeting with Aiden! My thesis is finished and so are my appearance models! Everything turned out pretty good! I am content with it all. I will post everything tomorrow but wanted to share my last photo shoot with you all!

It is really starting to hit me that yes next week is officially my last week of college. I have been working so much this semester that I haven't really thought about it. It is always something that is in the back of your mind but WOW! :)

I am pretty happy with them I am still tweaking but I wanted to keep them simple since it is a therapy tool. I was avoiding it this whole time but I really love how they are turning out so far! I know I have been randomly here latley but second semester senior year is unbelievably everywhere all at once let me tell ya!

I have ordered my portfolio today and am currently working on finishing the lovely inserts that will grace its pages.... :)

Here are some final shots that are bring rendered for thesis. I made all of the adjustments. The pieces are now all male female so that the kids have an easier time getting the board together any way that they would like.

I have also begun work on the dice! Thank to some help from a friend. The dice should be finished by tonight! It is coming along it is nice! It is just a shroud at the moment but it is looking nice.

Next step taking on the task of cutting the board.

Here is a sneak peek of what will be the dice. I went to Stitch by Stitch at the Easton Town Center and was able to get some samples and tags made. I am so excited to finish the dice!

I have started to sew it tonight and hopefully it will be done by tomorrow or Thursday.

I am so happy with how the branding came out for this.

For the past two weeks I have been working on my teaser for portfolio. I am basing the look of this off what I am planning to do for my portfolio. Enclosed will be my cover letter and resume. At the moment there are my list of references but that is so I can hand it in tomorrow. :) My logo and some information will be printed on the front as well as on the back of the envelope.

The teaser itself is a little book of some quick images of my designs. In the back is my business card.

I am getting so excited about all of this my website is getting closer to being done! IDSA is taking a revamp at the moment but will be up to date soon as well. I will post when I get more images of that.

This week has been full of working on things, that wont quit for a while. :) I hope that everyone is starting to enjoy the nice weather that we are starting to get ( At least in Ohio).

I have only just begun to work on my branding and Identity for my thesis and I wanted to share it with you and see what you thought. These were done mainly to explore color . I personally and liking the bottom ones a lot more than the top.

Last week was the Exhibit for Saarinen at my school. It seemed to be a good turn out of people. It was great seeing all that that they brought from the museum, but it was not that much. In all honesty though it was not what I expected, not to sound like a brat. I do appreciate that Knoll made CCAD a stop on their tour, there were pieces that I have not seen in person before. Here are some of his amazing pieces though! I love the lines that he has created on his pieces.

I know that I haven't posted much in the past few weeks but I have been working on things.... I am building my website and it will be done with in the week. I am very excited to get it all finished up. I have been teaching myself Square Space which has been trying at times but as of last night something clicked so it will be going faster now. YEAH!

Product Testing

Yesterday I was fortunate enough to visit good friend of mine, Aiden. Aiden is just under 3 and is full of personality. I love this kid, so cute!

I went to visit to test out the sizing of my board and the ball, along with the cards. I really needed to see how he reacted to the pieces and what he did with them without anyone telling him, also when there was direction what he did with it. I also needed a parents personal opinion on what was going on with all of the pieces and shapes and sizes.

All and all a great evening. It was great to see him interacting with everything. The first thing that he did was step on the board. He would continually return to it too. he enjoyed putting the board together and then running across it.

When the dice came in he loved throwing it around too. He had fun throwing it and telling you what color it landed on. I did find that the ball was too big for him, so i will be working on making it a little smaller, that way it is easier to pick up and toss.

The cards were fine for him to see the images and figure out what they were for. The only thing is that I want to make it a thicker material. It is way to easy for them to bend it and rip it even tough it is two play card stock.

All of these issues will be talked about tomorrow during my midterm and then over the next week it will hopefully be figured out as well.

I wish I had more of the board done. But I will be stopping by again at the end of everything to take more photos and to play the whole game with him. It is gonna be fun.

IDSA Run thrus

Today was our second run thru fro IDSA. We are having weekly meeting to run thru everything and practice what we are saying. It is a great help! I will post some shots when it is more refined. I am getting excited about it. Everything is beging to come together in some ways. By next week it should look a lot better.

Shawn and I consulting with Mr. Williamson about the nitty gritty. ( I really don't know why i move my hands the way I do. Italian I guess )

On Monday Shawn, Dustin and I are talking to the underclassmen about the program and showing them our work, answer any question. I will post some photos for that. I am excited to do it. Shawn and I spoke at College day for incoming students to the college. It was fun, you dont realize how much you know about something until you have to talk about it.

So I have just sent the RSVP to attend the Saarinen exhibit that is coming not only to the Columbus area, but to CCAD! Next Week! I am so psyched! Eero Saarinen is an amazing designer and architect. On top of everything else that I am doing at the moment. I have chosen to enter my IHA 2010 Competition entry - Apertif in to the James Dyson Awards. The final date for entry isn't for a while but tweaking the project booklet a bit wont be anything compared to what I am already doing. :)

It will get my design out there! I am excited! I can only hope for the best but at least I can say that I tried! I will post the updated photos when I re-shoot everything for my portfolio and this entry.

Even though I feel like I have caught the black plague, I have been trying desperately to still truck on and get 'er done!

The past two days I finished up the mock up of my dice, and have my first round of cards.

Thesis: Solidworks

Here are the game pieces in a modeling program. The point of these are for the kids to be the playing pieces. To hit a therapy point ( Autistic Occupational Therapy) The children will be putting the game together however they want to. Teaching them directions, interaction with family and others, as well as logical thought.

The shapes pop out so that the kids can figure out that when they put the game together themselves - they can also place the shapes in to.

The larger sections can come apart. There is not start or stop point for the kids. This way it can look however the children want to, and also deal with space in the home or therapy room.

The pieces fit easily together and have many of the same shape for the children to figure out how to fit together.

These are just a few minor rendered shots. I will begin to fully render in the next few weeks.

Here is just round one of mock ups for my portfolio and my leave behind and teaser.

It opened and there are little pockets for my cover letter and resume and for my portfolio pages which will be double sided. My logo will be printed on the cover. But that is for the next mock up.

This is my teaser / leave behind. The font will have my logo on it. When opened there is a little area for my card. The pages will be double sided and my resume will be a fold out that is perforated so they can fold it if need be.

Again these all area work in progress. But I am getting excited! I am finishing up my card and resume! Those will be up soon! YEAH

Thesis - working working working...

We have had a white out here in Columbus - so I am currently spending the day working on all that I can. I had so much to show you all for thesis but my really nice computer model is on the school computer.
I have a mock up for the game boards though! An adjustment was made since I shot the photos that I took yesterday afternoon. But here is the game board so far! It is only a section of the board because there was no need to buy all that foam. I am going to print out the model on the 3D printer! So i will be able to post a video of the to-scale model soon!

Yesterday a few friends and I had a thesis brainstorm. There will be more to come! But it was super helpful! We all found new points to work out and find out about our thesis. It was nice being in a small group! I suggest it for any project!

This is a good friend of mine Yasmine (who has two sweet blogs). She was my little kid for the afternoon! ;)

Here are a small sample of the first draft of cards for the game as well. They are a little bit of each Level. ( there are stages of Levels that the child will work with while pushing the ideas of social skills, logical thought and auditory skills.)

Coming up this Thursday we have our first run thru of our IDSA presentation. We have been preparing a script and everything. I will let you all know how it goes but I have been trying to get everything figured out the last two weeks.

I am currently re-sketching everything for this - and my portfolio. What is nice is that by the end of all of this almost half of my portfolio will be done!

We are all working really hard on this! I am excited for all of us that we get this opportunity. I mean it would be great to win but we are all friends and are pretty supportive of each other.

Huh? Nothing ever really goes this well for me, but this year is going really well! I have been accomplishing everything that I have shot for and more! It seems that three years of nothing but busting butt is starting to look like it is gonna pay off soon! ...well start ;)

I was notified a little while ago that my mentor Taylor Sears, my blog and myself might be in the CCAD Image Magazine! I just the ok that it will be! Image is a magazine that gets sent out to students and alumni from our school. The article will be talking about how I got Taylor as my mentor, the work we do together as well as how we stay in contact and how my blog works, and my work in it.

I am not sure when it will be printed- but Taylor has been interviewed, and we are taking photos tomorrow and talking about everything else tomorrow as well.

Thesis?

No for me it is not a long paper that you hand in at the end of you four years. For me the paper is part o the project!

I am designing a game for autistic children that through stages promotes social interaction, communication, logical thought and understanding. it is a HUGE task that I am taking on and I am so happy that I did. I love it!

In my Portfolio class there are going to be guest speakers. Designers in the field are honestly nice enough to come in and talk to us about the field and their part in their company. It is great that we get to hear from someones perspective that was in out shoes not too long ago and is still working in the field.

Chris Boggs of Priority Designs came in today. He was a great speaker, very informative. I felt bad because we all were not asking so many questions but the people that we have had in classes before this were not as talkative as he was. Chris graduated from CCAD in 2006 and has worked for Priority since some time after graduation. It was interesting to hear what his pet peeves where when looking at peoples portfolios and how they addressed the situation of applying for a position.

He left us with a Priority leave behind with a die-cut of their winning IDSA box car that you can make yourself. ( well a mock up of)

I spoke to him for only a moment after class but we spoke about setting up an appointment with him when the time comes to have him look at my IDSA presentation, have someone else's opinion. (you can never have too many)

I wanted to thank him for coming to our class today and speaking with us all! It was a great help to us.

Today was the announcement of the IDSA Merit awards Winners. ( well for stage one)

I HAVE MADE IT IN TO THE TOP THREE SPOTS it to represent CCAD in April as did Shawn Fortner and Dustin Sweeney. The three of us are very proud of each other and can not wait to show OSU up in the coming weeks.

I am so excited! This is what I was trying for for three years and I got it!

Last week I was working my little butt off to get a presentation together. I know that i work on a lot of them but this one was very different... Ever since I got to CCAD I knew about the IDSA Merit Awards Night, I wanted to be apart of it sooo much! I was EXTATIC when I got the nomination letter. IDSA is the Student section of the Industrial Design Society of America. Every year the Product Design department nominates their students that qualify get to compete against each other for the top three spots. They put all of their portfolios together and they get to show off everything that they have inside and out side of the department.

Once chosen the three from CCAD and the three from OSU's Department "battle it out" for 'top senior'. The title is for the chapter sections of IDSA from there the winner goes on to to the regional's and then if they are massively lucky to Nationals.

I worked my butt off on this presentation and was happy to say that I gave it my all and am waiting rather impatiently for the email from the teachers. Everyone gave great presentations but then again we would all like to win!

I will keep you up dated!

Victoria's Secret

This is a project from last spring semester. Every year the packaging class gets to work with Victoria's Secret. The subject every year being different.
I know that I am special and packaging and its graphics are honestly one of my favorite things to do!

This piece is entitled
"Beach Babe" (the title of the project overall) We designed a bag that is given to the buyer when a bathing suit is purchased on site. They will get a towel and a summer beauty care product.

We wanted to make sure that the user at the beach was a concept that stayed with the design. You go to the beach- you get wet as does your towel.

Our concept- a reversible bag with a double sided zipper that starts at the top. This way the towel has a chance to start drying instead of being in a wet wad at the bottom of your bag. There are pockets on one side so that if it is reversed then no one can get attempt to steal anything if you wish t use the bag when you go out.

The bag is made up of canvas so that it can be easily thrown in to the washer and dryer ensuring that it is always clean.

WE wanted to do something simple, because you are going to the beach and for those that are lucky you want the attention to not be on your bag. lol

My group mate created all of the graphics and colorings, even the hand dyed towel that is from pick and blends to an orange. While I designed the bag itself and made it.

Uganda and food.

This is a project from fall of last year (junior year). In our program we have been lucky enough to work with many companies in sponsored projects. Battle was one of our first, and it was an amazing experience. Battelle is a not for profit organization that works in so many areas. Trying to help those that need it.

We were able to work with their design department for most of the semester. Our objective was to find a problem in the world ( preferably in a 3rd world country) and design a solution to that problem. It was nice to hear how surprised they were at what problems we had found and the solutions that we ended up coming up with.

It was a great experience to work with them and get their feed back. We even go to see a little bit where their projects are in the Battelle Studio.

My research brought me to Uganda where there are massive problems with their government as well as with drought. As of now their food is mostly received rotten. If it gets there by chance and is not rotten when it gets there the massive amount of heat and the fact that the market are set up to be food on a board on the ground makes it go bad quickly. All of the nutrients in the food is gone by the time that people can buy i and eat it. money is so scarce there as well that one they buy the food that they can afford they need to go home and share it all with their families. Any nutrients that are left in the food wont make a big difference when it is being shared by 4 or more people at a time.

There needed to be a way where the markets could keep the food fresher for as long as possible, and there to also be a way for families to keep food as well at home. This is what a set out to do. Not to give a country electricity and any other unrealistically plans to change their way of life. But I wanted to make it better!

My ideation was driving by the fact that I wanted this to be made for Ugandans by Ugandans easily and with out the need of help from the government. This was going to prove to be hard. At the time I was taking Ceramics with Mr. Kaname Takada. We spoke about ceramics and how common it is around the world. I found that ceramics can work as a type of refrigeration system when sitting indies each other. This can be done only with a catalyst. Wet sand. My design was simple: one large basin. and inside that fill it with 1/4 wet sand each day. inside this the people at the market would place in to large jugs. over that a lid to cover all the extra open space and two lids on the jugs. I recommended that they place the basin half in the ground. ( the markets are on the same places regularly so this wouldn't be an issue) BUT when this is done the sun would hit unit, and causing the water in the sand to evaporate - this then would start to cool the inner areas of the basin as well as the jugs. This could make it so that the temperature inside the unit is 30 degrees cooler than outside.

The jugs could be taken home at the end of the night and placed in holes to make sure that there was no stealing but also to make sure that the food still stayed fresh for as long as possible.

Complicated I know.

The best part about this was that everything could be made by Ugandans as needed. Molds could be made easily with river clay, the "kilns" to fire they would use pit firing. Knowing that their water is typically contaminated there is a safe and natrual glaze that can be made and applied to the system to make sure that nothing harmful can leech in to the food.

It isn't going to change the world but it is something that could help. No government aid needed. I am in contact with some traveling groups to share this with Ugandans.

I feel so lucky to have gotten to do this project and would love to do more. If you would like any more information please contact me.

Bocci's Beefs is an adorable blog that is written by Bocci and his 'parental unit' Joan DeMartin. Joan is a writing teacher that I had last semester here at CCAD. It was a pleasure working with her on this project when aiding in the redesign of the blog and their business cards! The blog header was designed by a neighbor of Joan's. The font was gathered to create the cards.

Crazy Presenations and Thesis

These next two weeks will be a little trying... ;)

Tuesday will be the first presentation for our thesis project in studio. We are presenting out research to the class before we being to start any concept. Many of us have an idea. I have a kind of idea.... My thesis is becoming a little more complicated than I thought it already was! But none the less I am still enjoying it and can not wait to start ideation for it! There is just so so much research to go through to begin this presentation.

Also next week is the judging of Top Senior here at CCAD Industrial Design Department. Every year they choose three seniors to go p against OSU's. It is a portfolio-off where designers in the field vote and choose one to go on to regionals and so on and so forth. I am working hard , as is everyone else who is participating in it, to get it done and get ready to present next Thursday.

Lecture: Mikey Burton

Tonight a few friends and I went to OSU for the monthly CSCA (Columbus Society of Communication Arts). Mikey Burton was speaking there about his work and technique of his 'Midwesterny' design style.

When I heard about it I looked in to his work and at his site. I had to laugh a little bit because large chunk of his work was already sitting in my graphics and branding reference folder on my computer!!!!!

He began with band posters and has moved on to great graphic design, and branding. He loves letterpress and is amazing with silk screening.

He was great! Really engaging and really funny. Gave a great presentation and of course amazing work! His thesis for Kent State was my favorite things that he has done. He redesigned and packaged some classic books for kids! What was great especially was that he had photographed his ideation and shared that with us as well! It was so nice to see his thought process and experiments with type and layouts! ( no one gets it right the first time around!)

He has such a great style! It was really inspiring! I highly recommend it!

Here we are the second day of my last semester here at CCAD. Weird? Nervous? Why yes! Thank you for asking! This next semester will be filled of things! I WILL be posting so much more and a lot when I do! I have a few free lance projects going on that I am excited about, my thesis and my portfolio! Which you will see more of near the end of the week! My goal to have it all done and printed by early march! ( This week or next week I will have some sample shots of what is becoming my new website! I own cassandracappellodesign.com i need to put something that goes with such a name!)

My goal is to send out some teasers to get people interested in me and then the big package! Tah-Dah here I am please tell me if you like me! :) I am really excited! So many things are happening! I hope that I can keep up with them all!

Before we leave New York we went to the Natural History Museum. It was great to go there! It is such a nice place to see. I love going there and looking at everything. No matter how long you spend I feel that the next time you go you always miss something to see or to read.

This time was helpful because like I said in an earlier post I was able to gather photo research for my thesis. Since I am planning on creating a game of sorts for children with autism and their families I will need to use picto-grams as they do in education and in therapy. Being able to see other cultures interpretations of animals, and facial expressions was great! I feel that it helped a lot in getting a better understanding of how simple these graphics could get and what little details to make sure to keep in mind.

Busy Week!

This week was great! I was able to go to Evo Design in Conn. and get a lot of feed back on designs and my thesis and where I plan on going and doing after school. After going there on Monday, I took some friends to the city and got great reference for my thesis! We went to the Museum of Natural History and was able to see how other cultures used picto-grams and how they created faces and masks etc. It was really interesting to see the cultural relevance with in everything that I found there. I took lots of photos!!!! We then stopped at FAO Schwartz and was able to see a lot of the toys that I found on the internet, and then found some more for reference for educational toys for children.

Today I got the materials needed to print off my graphic cards. I can not wait to print them all and show them to you! My recipe cards still need some touching up but are looking great!

This break was great for research and time spent on work. I didn't get all that I wanted to done on my list of to-do's but I got a lot started and finished.I got all that I needed to and them some done for thesis and ecstatic for this semester to begin! I have worked so hard these past years with 18 credits a semester and not having 12 this last semester I am going to be working on thesis, portfolio, and all of my side projects that I want to get done! I am so so so excited! This semester will be so hard and trying on me with thesis and portfolio but I am ready for it!

These are a little late but I would like to thank Taylor and all of those who were great on Monday when I came to EVO. Everyone was so nice and helpful when answering questions that I had! I was able to sit on designer rendering and was shown around the office. It was so much fun! I really appreciated it! Sorry for it being late!!!

Working

I have been very busy working on things for my thesis lately and that is way I have not been posting as much as I would have hoped. I am still sketching and working on some graphic stuff but my main focus has been my thesis.

I have been lucky enough to live near a school that works with Autism and was able to make an appointment and tour the facilities and interview the workers.. I was even able to sit in a classroom and interact with the kids for a bit! It helped me so much! I am really excited! I know feel that I know what I am doing with my life second semester! It has a purpose. I am going to finish up some research tonight and tomorrow and get back on to posting my sketches and graphics.

A day at MOMA

Even though it was bitter cold I went to the city today with my dad and traveled to MOMA. We were excited for two things normally it is closed on Tuesdays and as of last night the Tim Burton Exhibit was sold out for the week...

Well we got tickets! OMG I will be honest. I really didn't think that it would be that good but it was honestly amazing! There was his personal sketches and also his character designs and sketches form all of the movies that he has done. They also had props from movies ( Edwards out fit, the angora sweater from Edwards Scissor hands, and a few other things) They did have Pierce Brosnan's head from Mars attacks! That was pretty cool! They also had the maquettes from The Nightmare Before Christmas and the corpse bride! They were so neat to see in person! There was about 20 different versions of Jack Sparrows face for reference. I got photos even though I wasn't supposed to.

There was also the amazing product areas! I was so excited to get to see some of Christopher Dressers designs! I love this tea pot!

I am in love with Zeisel's forms too! I want to get these from DWR as soon as I can!

And of course the great Dieter Rams!

I feel so bad but I forgot which team designed this but I know I saw them in Objectified.

Ok.... so after much deliberation and waking up one day and actually seeing what I had done I realize that my logo for Fawn Baby was not what it should be. Not even close. ;( So i set out to rework things and I found that I do not like the name even anymore. I wanted something more whimsical and fun for parents and for their kids once they are older and still playing with the toys.

I now have what I feel is closer to the final final branding. There is going to be more work on it. But I am currently working on some packaging and products for the line so I wanted to get this tackled. Please let me know what you think!

I have been working a lot with the pat week off of school and still plan on doing more. I will however be posting whenever I can. I am leaving for NY on Monday and am not sure when a scanner will be available. So I am going to be sketching, and making some models and still getting all of the research that I need for my thesis.

The the past few days I have been ripping through sketchbook pages. I have a lot that I want to do in the next few weeks on top of what I already need to do.. I haven't let myself get settled in to vacation mode just yet. I am not overloading but just keeping myself busy.

Here are some form studies for some wooden rattles. I am going to do more. I am not feeling any of these.

These two sketches a quick study of a toy set that I am looking on to making a mock up of. They are fruit and veggie wooden toys that come apart. When the child goes to put them together they will know that it is the right piece more so than recognizing it but it will sound out the word and then say it.

I just felt like doing on form studies on drinking glasses.

This was a quick study I did of an office paper weight that can be used to store and display notes. It would be all stainless steel.
